The First Hydrogen Refueling Station in BG

AQUACHIM Plays a Key Role in Bulgaria’s First Hydrogen Refueling Station

Bulgaria has taken an important step towards sustainable energy and clean mobility with the commissioning of the first hydrogen refueling station in the country and the Southeast Europe region. The facility is part of the field laboratory “Integrated Energy Systems” at the Center of Competence “HITMOBIL,” developed with the leading participation of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The project has been implemented through a partnership between scientific institutions and industry, with AQUACHIM among the main contractors, alongside other technology companies. AQUACHIM’s involvement includes key engineering and technological activities related to the construction of the hydrogen infrastructure - a significant contribution to the operation of the overall system.

The official opening of the hydrogen station took place on May 10, 2024. It is located on a site in the Druzhba district of the capital city, on the grounds of the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems “Evgeni Budevski” at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).

The facility marks the real beginning of a hydrogen mobility infrastructure in Bulgaria and the region. It allows vehicle refueling at standard pressures of 350 and 700 bar, making it compatible with both passenger and heavy-duty vehicles. Hydrogen is produced on-site via an electrolyzer powered by renewable energy sources, ensuring high purity and sustainable fuel origin.

With a compression capacity of 40–50 kg of hydrogen per day, the station can serve up to 10–15 cars or several buses daily, while also offering flexibility through the option for additional supply from external sources.

The implementation of the project is part of strategic efforts to develop hydrogen technologies and low-carbon transport in Bulgaria. Through collaboration between science and industry, a foundation is being created for the deployment of innovative energy solutions and the acceleration of the transition to a sustainable economy.

AQUACHIM’s participation in this large-scale and innovative project reinforces the company’s role as a reliable technological partner in the development of hydrogen energy and the implementation of high value-added solutions.
